HDAX GAS ENGINE LUBRICANTS FAQs

Gas engines operate at higher temperatures and have different combustion by-products. Specialized oils like the HDAX series are formulated to address these specific challenges. They provide enhanced protection against valve recession, pre-ignition, and oxidation, which are common issues in gas engines. The ashless, low ash or medium ash formulations, such as those found in HDAX 5100 Ashless and HDAX 9200 Low Ash, HDAX 9300 are critical in ensuring reliable operation and extended engine life. It is important to note that selection of lubricant and ash content should be in accordance with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) recommendation.

Oil drain intervals for gas engines vary depending on engine design, operating conditions, fuel quality, and lubricant performance.

Caltex HDAX gas engine oils are formulated for these power generation applications with strong oxidation and nitration resistance to support extended oil drain intervals. When combined with regular oil monitoring through Caltex Lube Watch oil analysis, operators can track lubricant condition, detect contamination, and determine the optimal time for an oil change. This condition-based approach helps safely extend drain intervals while maintaining engine reliability and protection in line with OEM recommendations.

HDAX gas engine oils are designed to deliver multiple performance benefits, including:

  • Excellent oxidation and nitration resistance.
  • Superior piston and valve deposit control.
  • Protection against cylinder liner wear and scuffing
  • Acid neutralization and corrosion protection
  • Extended oil drain capability
  • Catalyst compatibility in low-emission engines.

These properties help maintain engine cleanliness, reduce downtime, and extend equipment life.

HDAX lubricants are developed for a wide range of stationary gas engines used in industries such as power generation, oil and gas production, and cogeneration plants.

They are suitable for many modern and legacy gas engines, including spark-ignition and dual-fuel engines operating on natural gas, LPG, landfill gas, or biogas.

Low Ash (e.g., HDAX 5200/9200/8200): Contains a small amount of metallic additives to provide better valve seat protection and acid neutralization. These are the most common for modern four-stroke gas engines.

Ashless (e.g., HDAX 5100): Formulated without metallic additives to prevent spark plug fouling and port plugging, typically used in older two-stroke engines.

HDAX oils are formulated with advanced additive technology to resist oxidation, nitration, and sludge formation while protecting critical engine components.

By maintaining lubricant performance and minimizing deposits and wear, HDAX oils help reduce unplanned downtime and support longer engine operating life.
